CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: DV-EN-174801-0123

For the typical homeowner, choosing exterior color can be a daunting task; however, there is guidance available to help choose color palettes that complement the exterior of the home. This course presents the FRESH approach: a strategic method used for the selection of colors for the exterior of buildings. The course focuses on both residential and commercial design considerations and details the steps to follow in the color selection process to achieve a harmonious design.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the five key elements that must be considered when choosing exterior colors and how they influence color choices.
  • Implement a step-by-step plan for selecting colors and making color placement decisions.
  • Describe the various environmental and physical factors that affect color choice for both residential and commercial buildings.
  • Execute strategies designed to help your customers make confident color decisions.

Faculty BIO

Kate Smith works with companies, large and small, who are building a relationship with their customers around color. She helps them by creating compelling stories about their company, products, and services that can be distributed in print, on air, online, or via social media.

Her clients offer great products and services but often find that their customers don't feel confident when making a purchase decision involving color. Kate is able to get inside the buyer's mind, understand why they hesitate, and develop exactly the right information or tools at every step in the process to allow customers to make a color decision they feel good about. The result is that the company Kate works with develops a trusted relationship with their customers and sees a positive impact to their bottom line because they are seen as a resource not just a seller.

She is a contributing editor to House Beautiful and CQ magazines. Her quotes, interviews, and articles regularly appear in the InStyle, Family Circle, Cosmopolitan, Washington Post, Miami Sun Sentinel, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, and many other well-recognized publications. She has appeared on-air numerous times including on CBS Sunday Morning, Great Day Houston, the Christopher Lowell Show, BT Television, and Coast-to-Coast AM.

Kate Smith is an active member and Chair holder in Color Marketing Group, the premier international association for color design professionals. She is also the creator of a fully accredited Color Certification program for design professionals. Kate holds a BFA from Kent State University.
