Content Description

Designing with Commercial/Industrial Insulated Metal Wall Panels, 2024
CEU: 0.1 | CEU Code: MS-EN-103104-1224

Insulated metal panels (IMPs) are lightweight composite exterior wall and roof panels with superior insulating properties. Commercial and industrial buildings benefit from their energy efficient insulation, lightweight construction, durability, and cost-effective, timely installation. This course discusses IMPs in terms of their design options, appropriate support structure, installation, function, code compliance, and warranties.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the characteristics of commercial/industrial insulated metal panels (IMPs) and the design options available.
  • Summarize the factors affecting panel spans, and the relationship of these factors to structural supports.
  • Visualize the IMP installation process, including flashings and sealants.
  • Explain how IMPs provide all necessary water, thermal, air, and vapor control layers through a single component.
  • Recall IMP performance and testing requirements of the model building codes and insurance listing agencies.
  • Differentiate between the various IMP product and installation warranties available.

Faculty BIO

With over 26 years of experience in architecture and the past 19 of those as a registered architect, Kevin has worked on a diversified collection of projects including the urban high-rise, retail, healthcare, multi-family, and major industrial building types. Kevin's role at Metl-Span, a Nucor company is to combine his experience as an architect and his technical knowledge of the insulated metal panel to provide an unprecedented level of project support. Design assistance, specification development, product research, and installation training are several of the adaptable roles that Kevin can fill while ensuring the smooth management and successful completion of the design intent.
